EU SETS ASIDE EURO 639.9 MILLION FOR HUMANITARIAN OPERATIONS WORLDWIDE INCLUDING EAST, CENTRAL AFRICA.

THE European Union (EU) has allocated an amount of Euro 639.9 million to humanitarian actions in ongoing and protracted crisis situations worldwide as of January 1, 2012 for a
period of two years.

Under this framework an initial allocation of Euro 10 million is foreseen for refugees from the East African Great Lakes region covering mainly Burundi, Tanzania and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This amount is made up of Euro 7 million for humanitarian aid and Euro 3 million for food assistance.

The humanitarian response proposed by European Union in this context will focus on the humanitarian consequences of displacements (refugees from DRC, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania, returnees and repatriation) in Burundi and Tanzania.

Besides, specific preparedness and response activities connected to epidemic outbreaks or disasters requiring a small scale humanitarian response may also be supported.
